Public transport in Sofia

The price for a single ride ticket (paper ticket) for the Metro is 1.60 BGN (Leva) (0.82 EUR). The ticket is valid for the entire Metro network so the same ticket can be used for a transfer to any other line. Tickets can be bought from the cashier desks in the metro stations or from ticket machines (www.metrosofia.com/en/tickets). Contactless credit or debit cards can also be used to enter the Metro.

Trams, trolleybuses and buses cover the whole city, including the outskirts (https://openbulgaria.org/post/public-transport-sofia/). There are 3 options to pay for the tickets:

1) A paper ticket costs 2.00 BGN (Leva) and can be bought from the driver.

2) Another option is to buy a special transport card (‘ultralight’ card), which can be used for loading short-term electronic transport documents valid on all forms of public transportation, including Metro. The card costs 0.80 BGN and can be bought at the cashier desks. It needs to be loaded with the desired short-term travel tickets or as a daily card. The cheapest ticket is 1.60 BGN and allows the transfer between as many vehicles as needed within 30 minutes. If the transport with transfers between as many vehicles as needed lasts 60 minutes, then, the price is 2.20 BGN.

3) Daily travel electronic card is valid for every kind of public transport and it costs 4.00 BGN. By using a debit card in 3 different vehichles the joint payment will be charged only up to 4.00 BGN and will be valid as a daily card.

The ticket/card must be tapped against a checking machine (inside the vehicle) and the machine will flash green.
